Wes Craven
Wes Craven The film maker and theorist has a theory that 'Murders are more scary when in a safe place'. His theory intrigued our group as our genre is zombie therefore it is considered there are no safe places. His idea conveys that the worst and most terrifying murders always take place within a safe an un expected area such as a victims home or school. He also conveys the idea that younger people often inherit their parents problems from seeing a past murder or tragedy which them drives them to commit crimes similar to what they've witnessed. Cravens theory has been used in a lot of his films an example being the first 'Scream' (1996) where the first victim is murder'd within her own home, this creates fear within the watcher as it sends a message that none of the characters are safe.
We can incorporate this within our horror very well as there is technically no safe place within a zombie apocalypse, however the group of survivors have faith that they may have found one within the safe heaven. Therefor the characters are setting themselves up for one Cravens typical terrifying deaths which may come within the safe heaven they have found. This all brings suspense within our zombie horror as the crowd may be expecting to see someone brutally murder'd within the new setup they have discovered. |
Another example of his theory in action is one of his own films 'Nightmare on Elm street' (1984). The films plot is about a man with a very bad past who is burnt alive by the parents of his victims. He then haunts, tortures and murders children within a ghostly state. This is an inspiring film as some of the murder scenes a great to be rein acted and copied, they also convey all his theories of the typical brutal murders as most of the murders happen within the victims own home which is very ironic as home is considered one of the safest places. The victims are also tormented within there own dreams which again conveys his theory as the idea of a dream is to visualize something that does not exist in reality however it is very real for the people who are being victimized.
