The BBFC classification PG stands for Parental Guidance and is suitable for all audiences, but mainly aimed at Children aged 7-8 and above.
A PG film can include some mild bad language, so long as it is infrequent, and may be allowed sexual references or innuendos so long as tasteful and brief. Violence can be shown in a PG film, but not in great detail. Images of blood are allowed however the wound cannot be shown. Violence is usually shown via action sequences. |
The BBFC classification 12A stands for 12 adult, and is aimed towards children 12 or older. A child below the age of 12 may be allowed to see a 12A film so long as they are accompanied by an adult.
A 12A film may contain strong bad language, though used infrequently. Sexual scenes may be included if they are discreet and brief and sexual references may be used if tasteful. Violence in a 12A should be brief, however blood is allowed to be shown. The use of weapons is allowed in a 12A, however it must not glamourise accessible weapons, such as knives. |
The BBFC classification for a 15 is not suitable for any person under the age of 15. Only people above the age of 15 are permitted.
A 15 film can contain any amount of strong bad language, in any situation. It may also include longer scenes of a sexual nature, and nudity is permitted. The film contains much more violence than a 12, however it does not dwell on gore or sadistic actions. Our film is going to be a 15 classification as our audience research proved that zombie films were most popular with adolescents and late teenagers. If we were to disguise the gore in our film, to allow it to be classified as a 15 our target audience would grow by a large percentage, rather than limiting it to only 18 and above. |
The BBFC classification for 18 does not permit anyone under the age of 18 to view the content material in the film. No one under the age of 18 is permitted to view the film.
An 18 film can include unlimited use of very strong language, can include longer and more explicit scenes of a sexual nature and can include any amount of violence and can dwell on a graphic image for a long amount of time. Our film will not be classified 18 as it limits our target audience to adults only, and although we would be unrestricted in the use of blood and gore it would not be worth halving our target audience.
