Amazon - What's Selling?
Zombie Subgenre |
After research to see what was the most popular horror film brought on Amazon, World War Z (2013) was the number one of the whole genre. This fits perfectly in with our idea for our trailer as zombie movies are obviously a popular sub genre of horror, and have the ability to maintain popularity of long periods of time, as World War Z is now a year old. The next serious horror film in the sales list is 28 Weeks Later (2007) , another zombie horror, showing again the popularity of the genre. As the sales are still rising, shows that the audience have had a continuos interest in zombie films, and have an attachment to 'classic' zombie movies of the sub-genre.

In conclusion for the Zombie genre, we found it to be a popular genre, with a lot of story range, and potential to be a really interesting film. However we do not want to over saturate the market with zombie films, so we intend to add an extra element to our trailer, to keep our target audience interested. (NE)
Slasher
After researching the slasher genre it appears that slasher films have recently fallen out of fashion with the audience. Although many films linked with the subgenre still remain in the top 100 horror films, they are relatively low in the rankings and sales are still declining. This trend is shown by films such as 'Scream' (1996) which no longer holds a place on the top 100 list, despite being a 'classic' slasher. Other classic slashers that follow this pattern of declining sales are the two reboots of the popular 1980's films Friday the 13th (1980) and Nightmare on elm street (1984) which shows a lack of interest in slashers with today's audiences.

In conclusion, we have decided to steer clear of the slasher genre, as sales from amazon show that the genre is no longer popular with the audience. Although the sub-genre is quintessential to the horror genre, our target audience appears to have latched on to more recent sub-genres, such as zombie (NE)
Paranormal
The Paranormal genre is another sub-genre that is climbing in popularity with the audience, since the success of the Paranormal Activity (2007-) franchise. Amazon shows that two paranormal films The conjuring (2013) and Insidious 2 (2013) are both climbing the sales of the top ten, just underneath films like World war Z (2013) and 28 weeks later (2007). The current horror audience leans in favour of paranormal films, however a genuine fear is that the market will become over-saturated with the paranormal genre, and our film will not do as well, when compared to newer and more exciting genres that have began appearing in more recent years, such as the zombie genre.
Our group will likely stay away from a paranormal film, as we fear that it will get lost in other more obscure paranormal films, and perform poorly in the box office. (NE)

Psychological
Whilst researching into paranormal films we found that the psychological sub-genre was no longer as popular as it had been in previous years. This could be due to the audience growing tired of similar plots and situations contained with the films. A Psychological film had not made it into Amazons top 100 list, which proves that audiences are no longer buying this type of film.
Our group is unlikely to make a psychological horror, as they are lacking in sales and performing poorly at the box office. It would unwise for our group to invest time in making a film that is unlikely to sell well. (NE)
